Support for both Bluetooth and the Hue Bridge
Since mid-2019, Philips Hue has been updated with additional features that allow it to be used as a Bluetooth-connected lighting system. The bulbs are compatible with both Bluetooth and the Hue Bridge (ZigBee) and its smart home functionality.
To make it easier to take your first steps with the Hue system, you can now connect (up to 10) bulbs directly to the Hue Bluetooth app, which looks and feels just like the original, albeit with more limited functionality. This gives you the chance to try out Philips Hue before you decide to buy the Hue Bridge and upgrade to the fully functional system, which uses your home network rather than Bluetooth to communicate.

The smart home functionality isn’t completely lost with this simpler version of Hue. In addition to the Hue remote control with the dimmer accessory, the Hue Bluetooth function is still fully compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Home (coming soon). So you can control the lights with your voice when you get home, change the colour and dim them whenever you like. To access more features and accessories, you’ll need the Hue Bridge.
